Malted milk powder makes all the difference here—it provides that distinct, thick, and slightly nutty flavor reminiscent of old-fashioned diners. The trick to keeping it thick is to pour the milk into the blender first and avoid over-blending.

Ingredients

 3 scoops vanilla ice cream

3 tablespoons malted milk powder (such as Carnation or Ovaltine)

 1/2 cup whole milkflavour

 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

 Whipped cream, for topping (optional)

 Maraschino cherry, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

1. Chill your glass — For best results, place your serving glass in the freezer 5–10 minutes before serving.

2. Load the blender — Pour the milk into the blender first, followed by the malted milk powder, vanilla extract, and ice cream.

3. Blend — Blend on medium speed for 30–45 seconds, until smooth and creamy. Avoid over-blending, as this can cause the ice cream to melt and make the shake too thin.

4. Check consistency — The shake should be thick enough that it is difficult to pour into the glass. Add a little more ice cream to thicken it further, or a little more milk to thin it out.

5. Serve — Pour into your chilled glass, top with whipped cream, and add a cherry if desired. Serve immediately.

Tips

1. Malted milk powder is the key ingredient — it imparts a nutty, slightly toasty flavor that distinguishes a malt from a regular milkshake.

2. For the richest and most delicious flavor, use high-quality vanilla ice cream (such as Häagen-Dazs or Tillamook).

3. To make a very thick shake, place the ice cream back in the freezer for 15 minutes before blending.

4. To enhance the sweetness and further improve the flavor, add a pinch of salt.
