Rava Upma Recipe: Healthy Breakfast and Easy to make Upma Recipe

 Upma is a delicious, savoury, and popular South Indian breakfast recipe made from cream of wheat or semolina flour called rava or sooji. This traditional recipe involves roasted rava cooked in hot boiling water, flavoured with ghee (or oil), cashews, urad dal (white lentils), chana dal (husked and split Bengal gram), onions, ginger, hari mirch, and additional spices. Sugar can also be added to make it mildly sweet and Savoury        .


This steamy hot breakfast can be made vegetarian by using oil instead of ghee. Full of warmth, flavour, and yummy, this upma tastes delicious. The main ingredient in any upma recipe is rava. Also called ‘semolina’ or ‘sooji’ in Hindi and ‘cream of wheat’ or ‘semolina’ in English, it is simply granulated wheat. Hence, this breakfast food is known as sooji ka upma in North India.


Upma is a traditional breakfast dish served in restaurants across South India, including Maharashtra. It is also a common snack prepared in South Indian homes. In fact, upma was a regular breakfast or evening snack in my house when I was growing up.

Healthiest Morning Breakfast Rava Upma Recipe

Ingredients: 

-1 cup of Rava (fine variety) 

-⅓ cup finely chopped onion

-1 teaspoon chopped green chilies

-1 teaspoon finely chopped ginger

-2 tablespoons coriander leaves (cilantro)

-8 to 10 curry leaves

-10 to 12 cashews

-1 teaspoon chana dal (peeled and split Bengal gram)

-1 teaspoon urad dal (peeled and split black gram)


Instructions:


1. To make the upma, heat semolina in a pan and dry roast it on medium flame for 4 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Keep aside.

2. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds to it. When the seeds crackle, add urad dal, curry leaves, and green chillies and fry for a few seconds on a medium flame.

3. Add onions and fry on a medium flame for 1 to 2 minutes.

4. Add roasted semolina, 3 cups hot water and salt, mix well and cover with a lid and cook on a low flame for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.

5. Add lemon juice and sugar, mix well and cook on a medium flame for 1 minute, stirring continuously.

6. Fill the upma in a glass bowl and transfer to a plate. Serve the upma immediately, garnished with coriander.
