A Java Chip Frappuccino is a coffee-based drink featuring blended dark chocolate "chips," whereas a Mocha blends "mocha sauce" with coffee—making the texture of the chocolate chips the drink's most distinctive feature.

A thick, creamy, Starbucks-inspired milkshake packed with a bold coffee flavor, rich chocolate syrup, and real chocolate chip pieces. Even better than the original—and made right at home!

Ingredients

2 shots of espresso (or ½ cup of strongly brewed coffee or cold brew), chilled

2 cups vanilla ice cream

½ cup whole milk

3 tablespoons chocolate syrup (a little extra for garnish)

¼ cup mini dark chocolate chips (a little extra for topping)

1 cup ice cubes

Freshly whipped cream, for serving

 Java Chip Milkshake

Instructions

Brew and chill the coffee. Pull your espresso shots (or brew a strong cup of coffee) and place them in the refrigerator until completely chilled. Do not use hot coffee—it will melt the ice cream.

Prepare the glasses. For a stunning presentation, drizzle chocolate syrup along the inside walls of the glasses.

Blend. Add the chilled espresso, vanilla ice cream, milk, chocolate syrup, chocolate chips, and ice to a blender. Blend on low speed for about 30 seconds, then blend on high speed for another 10–20 seconds until smooth and creamy.

Serve and garnish. Pour into the prepared glasses. Top with a generous swirl of whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate syrup, and a sprinkle of chocolate chips.

Suggestions and Variations

Stronger Coffee Flavor: For a higher caffeine kick, use cold brew concentrate or substitute the regular coffee with 2 shots of espresso.

No Espresso Machine? Use very strong-brewed coffee (chilled) instead, or dissolve 1–2 teaspoons of instant espresso powder in 2 tablespoons of hot water, then let it cool.

Extra Chocolatey: For a deeper mocha flavor, use chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla.

Frozen Coffee Cubes: Freeze leftover coffee in an ice cube tray and use them in place of regular ice cubes—this intensifies the coffee flavor without diluting the shake.

Dairy-Free Version: Use coconut-based ice cream, oat milk or almond milk, and dairy-free dark chocolate chips. Sweeten with 1 tablespoon of maple syrup.

For Kids (Caffeine-Free): For a caffeine-free version that kids will love, use chocolate milk instead of coffee.

Salted Caramel Twist: Add 1 tablespoon of caramel sauce and a pinch of sea salt before blending.

Storage:

It is best enjoyed immediately. If stored, the chocolate chips will lose their texture, so always blend it fresh just before serving.

Tips for Making It Perfect:

Prepare your espresso shots and place them in the refrigerator to chill before you begin the recipe.

Add the chilled espresso, milk, chocolate syrup, chocolate chips, and ice to a blender. Blend on low speed for about 30 seconds, then blend on high speed for another 10–20 seconds, until everything is thoroughly combined and perfectly smooth. You can freeze your coffee into cubes and use these coffee cubes instead of regular ice cubes to get an even more intense coffee flavor without diluting the shake.

Dark chocolate chips work best—though you can also use chopped chocolate or mini chocolate chips.
